Tech Advisor also reviews all the available Thunderbolt 4 docks.ĭocks aren’t just for MacBooks. For more non-Thunderbolt USB-C-only docks check out Tech Advisor’s roundup of the best USB-C docking stations for laptops. Here we concentrate on Thunderbolt docks, but also include cheaper USB-C docks-which Thunderbolt MacBooks can use, but at the cost of reduced bandwidth and display limitations. There are many cheap adapters that let you add more devices to a USB-C or Thunderbolt MacBook (see our roundup of the best USB-C adapters for Macs), but for maximum flexibility check out these docking stations that take care of all your extra port requirements, and allow you to simply attach it to your laptop with just one cable when you get to the office or come home. You need one (“upstream”) Thunderbolt port for connecting to and charging your laptop (although the 14/16in MacBooks can also power via the MagSafe port), and likely at least another (“downstream”) to attach further devices (hard drives, external display, and others). If you require a bunch of fast ports including Gigabit Ethernet, then look for a docking station that fulfils your needs. If you just need a few extra ports, a USB-C hub or Thunderbolt 4 hub might be your best choice. As Gigabit Ethernet’s speed is 1Gbps, a cheaper 5Gbps USB-C to Ethernet adapter will work just as well. Some later docks include faster 2.5Gb Ethernet but you’ll need a 2.5GbE router or other device to get the benefit. MacBooks also lack wired Internet access via a Gigabit Ethernet port, so if you want to escape flaky Wi-Fi, buy a dock with at least Gigabit Ethernet, although you could add a Thunderbolt-to-Ethernet adapter if you have a spare TB port. Although this is rated as UHS-II (312MBps), Apple has pegged it back at 250MBps, so for the fastest speeds (and a microSD slot if you need one), a dock will likely be a better choice for memory-card use if it is rated at UHS-II rather than UHS-I (104MBps). These MacBooks also have an SD card reader. With three TB4 and an HDMI port, a MacBook with an M1 Max could connect to up to four external displays without the need for a dock, although such a power user would likely require extra Thunderbolt ports for other devices to make up for using all the laptop ports for multiple monitors. This means that when using any docking station, M1 MacBook users cannot extend their desktop over two or more displays, and will be limited to either dual Mirrored displays or one external display-although there are software workarounds and dedicated docks that allow you to add more than one external monitor to an M1 or M2 MacBook. While Apple’s MacBooks featuring the company’s own M1 or M2 Silicon chip are super speedy compared to the models sporting Intel processors, early models come with an incredible limitation: they don’t support more than one external display in Extended Mode even via their Thunderbolt 3 ports. Natively over USB-C, Macs can only connect to one external display in Extended mode (where the screen extends beyond what you can see on the laptop screen, as opposed to Mirrored mode that replicates exactly what you get on the laptop screen) but you’ll get two Extended mode screens over a Thunderbolt connection. If you want to connect more than one external display to your MacBook you’ll need a Thunderbolt dock, rather than a USB-C dock. You can turn that 13in laptop screen into an iMac-sized 27in or even larger monitor by adding an extra display-or connect two large screens to extend your screen across your whole desk. If you use your laptop as your principal computer, you would do well to consider attaching at least one larger display to create a hybrid desktop/laptop setup (with a keyboard, mouse and printer all available via a single connection to your MacBook). If you don’t require the ultimate bandwidth for the fastest data transfer and best screen frame rates or resolutions, a USB-C dock might suit your purposes and save you money. We have included some cheaper non-Thunderbolt USB-C docks. That said, there are still some great-and often more affordable-TB3 docks available, and most Apple users won’t see much difference between TB3 and TB4-the Thunderbolt 4 standard was mainly about getting Windows laptops up to speed, although there are technical benefits for MacBook Pro users, such as smarter daisy-chaining and faster PCI hard-drive connections. If your MacBook is equipped with Thunderbolt 4, then you really should buy a TB4 dock if you need more ports than those 14/16in laptops already possess.īuying a Thunderbolt 4 dock is a wise decision based on future-proofing even for owners of TB3 Macs as the standard is backwards compatible with TB3 and USB-C.

Under current Denver regulations, the entire trompo must be cooked and served - or cooked and properly stored - within four hours any remainder after that time must be discarded. That last rule is good news for pastor fans: A seasoned taquero would never slice into raw meat - and a well-maintained trompo, as the pastor cone is called, will always have a thick layer that is above the 155 degrees required for beef and pork (chicken, as shawarma is sometimes made with, must hit 165). As long as the meat being sliced is completely cooked, no further time on the griddle or pan is needed, but any slices that are undercooked must be further cooked, and undercooked slices can’t be stored and reused with cooked slices. “Once they place the cone, it has to remain on the roaster and be continuously rotating.” And after the meat is shaved off the cone, it must be held at 135 degrees or above, or chilled to 41 degrees or below relatively quickly (within six hours). “It has to do with time control as well as temperature control,” explains Grace Nelson, a supervisor in the food program for the Public Health Inspections division. (That extra step was bemoaned by pastor purists, who claimed that the additional cooking dried out the meat and muddled the roasted flavor gained by the traditional method.)īut a couple of years ago, the DEH devised a new set of regulations that had the potential to kill off vertical roasting in many kitchens around town. With vertical broilers, as the Denver Department of Environmental Health designates the equipment used for pastor and gyros, previous rules stipulated that the meat had to be roasted and then finished on a griddle or hot pan to ensure that it was served at a safe temperature. With pastor and similar spit-roasted meats, what once worked on the busy streets of the city where a dish originated may not meet current safety practices in another city. While most restaurant owners and cooks understand that meat held between 41 and 135 degrees Fahrenheit for very long will probably result in contaminated product, the need to sell food sometimes outweighs stringent adherence to food-handling guidelines. But in some settings - say, a restaurant with many other items on the menu or a taqueria that does a brisk business on Saturday nights but is almost empty during weekday lunch - a twenty-pound tower of raw meat sitting at room temperature for hours doesn’t conform to our modern notions of food safety (based on scientific evidence, not mere squeamishness). The process relies on a steady stream of customers so that as the raw meat at the center of the cone cooks, the meat on the outer layers is shaved away, never sitting too long, thus guaranteeing a safe and healthy meal. Similar beef and lamb rigs employ the same cooking method in food stalls along the Mediterranean, where the meat is called gyros, doner or shawarma, depending on the country you’re in. A couple more quick swipes of the knife add a shower of pineapple - and your taco is ready.Īt least, that’s the way it’s worked for generations of taco stands in Mexico City and other towns where tacos al pastor are popular. Then, when the outer layer is perfectly crisp and sizzling, the taquero brandishes a machete-sized knife and carves thin shavings of pork that fall into a tortilla waiting in his other hand. A vertical cone of marinated pork - usually shoulder sliced thin and stacked on a skewer - spins slowly in front of a red-hot burner a pineapple or an onion (or sometimes a chunk of pork fat) skewered at the top weeps tears of joy that streak the cone with a mahogany patina as the juices caramelize. For meat lovers, carne al pastor is an object of beauty. It all comes down to how patient you are, and when you’re dealing with oaks, patience comes with the territory. Your options for planting Quercus are relatively limited, and the cost of doing so can range from little to no cash exchanged and a few minutes of your time to huge investments of thousands of dollars. Many parks and wooded areas feature a variety of different types that offer shade and respite from the summer heat.īeyond these uses, Quercus trees are also vital to wildlife, and a host of species depend on oaks to survive.Īdding more oaks to our landscapes and parks directly helps our local ecosystems, and that helps to strengthen the natural world everywhere. Oak trees in the modern day are used largely as landscape ornamentals. The tannins in oak leaves were utilized in many non-culinary areas as well, from tanning leather to making cosmetics and feeding animals. It apparently doesn’t taste very good, or so I’ve read, but enough of it could be dried and ground to make a plain and slightly nutty flour that pairs well with wild game.Įven the leaves have been used in making sauerkraut, wine, and tea. Removing the hard outer shell exposes the edible stuff inside. The acorns produced by oaks were a food source for many Indigenous people. Ship masts, bows and arrows, furniture, wine barrels, tools, housing – Quercus is ideal for pretty much anything that requires the finest sturdy and resilient lumber. The wood is strong and resilient to rot and weathering, and it’s been put to use in any project that requires strong lumber. Since then, humankind has found uses for every bit of the oak tree. Quercus has a muddied history, as most ancient life forms do, but fossil evidence suggests that the genus found its start in North America. A different developer contributed each piece of the puzzle, and I discovered and installed them in about three seconds. So there I was, nearly done cobbling together my own tooling to work on Graphviz diagrams, when I found a much smoother experience presented on a silver platter. I _was_ surprised, however, by the, which previews the output right there in the editor, as you type! I wasn’t surprised at all by the, which provides syntax highlighting for this arcane language. I searched Visual Studio Code’s available extensions: One last stop before I start writing: syntax highlighting. None of my SVG-viewing applications pick up the file change automatically, but it’s not too bad to tab over and refresh. Next, wanting to iterate quickly, I set up a watcher to automatically recompile when the input file changes. The primary tool in the Graphviz suite is `dot`, which reads a source file and emits one of several output types. It’s not beautiful, but it sure beats dragging endpoints around with a mouse. Here’s the source for the image at the top of the post: The documentation scared me a little when it warned that the syntax is _”not really HTML,”_ but then they made up for it by providing a formal grammar of exactly what is accepted. , read through some documentation, and finally found just the ticket.Ī relatively recent addition to Graphviz (circa 2003!) is the This carefully-named feature lets you specify node appearance using familiar HTML ` ` syntax, with the addition of named _ports_ where you can connect arrows. I was familiar with its flowchart-like diagrams of bubbles, boxes, and diamonds, but I thought I’d check to see if it could be coaxed into producing connected tables. Even if you haven’t used it directly, you’ve probably seen Graphviz output before, perhaps in an or a database. is a collection of utilities and libraries for generating diagrams from a language called DOT. I intended to check these files into source control, so they needed to diff and merge nicely.ĭo any tools come to mind? I searched around for a while before dusting off an old one: It works with a text-based source format.Table entries can be edited and reordered without breaking links.I do not want to manually position the ends of arrows, ever. In particular, I sought the following properties: Like software, they had to be easy to change. The diagrams I was producing describe software. Specifically, I was documenting how a software system accepts data from a third party, mapping fields from external records to an internal message type:īasically, I wanted to draw arrows between rows of tables. When I came up short, I used a very old tool instead. Questions, comments, and suggestions for improvement are welcome.I recently found myself looking for a modern tool to diagram relationships between tables of data. If you use this in your software, I would greatly appreciate a credit in your software's about page I've put a fair amount of time in to this project, and wish to spread the word that others may benefit from it. While it can work with the built-in (and unsupported) mwdot function, it is recommended you install the full GraphViz suite, available at, along with extensive documentation and samples.Ĭredit goes to Jonas Ballani for his Bezier function which is used to draw the splines.Īlso, the inspiration came from Leon Peshkin's GraphViz interface, which (unfortunately) didn't quite cut it for our needs, and required me to write my own. Furthermore, custom node shapes and arrows can be easily added. It has been quite extensively tested, and should work for just about any graph you can throw at it. Please see the comments at the beginning of the file for more information on usage/limitations. This code takes a GraphViz ready DOT file, passes it to Graphviz (either using dot (fallback to mwdot if not present) or a custom layout engine you specify.) The output is then parsed and drawn in an axes specified by you, along with returning object handles and information about the graph as an adjacency matrix. “The velocity of change in electrification technology right now is unbelievable and the EV transition is the main catalyst.” ABB robot in Audi ChangchunĪBB has commissioned research into the extent to which electrification will be introduced into the world’s car plants and predicts that 86 per cent of European car output will be EVs in 2035, with the comparative figures for Asia and North America 86 per cent and 45 per cent respectively. “OEMs have got to reduce the price of battery-electric cars and that means more efficient factory operations,” said ABB global powertrain group manager Patrick Matthews. Rethinking production to drive manufacturing costs down will compensate for the high cost of essential componentry in electrics, and is emerging as a key pivot point in automotive manufacturing, believes ABB. ABB, one of Europe’s largest robot manufacturers, believes radical new production methods are coming.Ī radical reshaping of automotive production lines, to include flexible manufacturing cells, robotic guided vehicles and automated parts warehouses moved to trackside, are the key to making electric cars affordable, Europe’s second-biggest maker of robots, ABB, believes.ĪBB is pushing a radical new production system that abandons the traditional assembly/trim line, with its dozens of sequential assembly stations, in favour of multiple flexible manufacturing cells between which vehicles and parts bins are hauled on trolleys by automated mobile robotic vehicles. I can't wait to see what it's like when it's, er, finished. It'd be a big number, too: this is the first game of 2015 that I'd call essential. In any other circumstance I'd be getting ready to slap a score on the end of this review. This is a game with a full campaign and Steam Workshop support whose only real gesture at incompleteness is the user survey you're asked to complete at the conclusion of every level. It's strange that Infinifactory is an Early Access release at all, really. Infinifactory makes the process optional, and it's the better game for it. Spacechem forced you to examine your methods in the same way, and barred your progress through the campaign on that basis. Topping leaderboards means building better machines, often from scratch, and excising any bad habits you've developed over the course of your first run. It's possible to beat the game with inefficient solutions, as I have, but a tremendous challenge still remains. The difficulty escalates steadily over the course of the fifteen-hour campaign, but unlike Spacechem you're never confronted with a time limit or a resource budget. Pressing F10 at any time causes the game to generate a looping gif of your factory, saved to your desktop to do with as you will. It's the sort of thing you'll want to share, too. Edit: They won't work if they're stuck to anything, even the floor. You can place objects, like welders and eviscerators, onto the end of pushers. Solutions are tremendously gratifying to watch no matter how accomplished they are, and there's a simple reliable joy to watching complex machines work. Infinifactory A Screenshot of Infinifactory By: Zednaught 1. "I refuse to comply!" I cry at my captors, my protest taking the form of a rubbish forklift factory that outputs waste in the form of superfluous wooden benches for no good reason whatsoever. Solutions express much about their creator-fastidious efficiency, subtle grace, or, in my case, a degree of slapstick incompetence that I have chosen to frame as defiance. Infinifactory's tremendous personality, however, comes from the game's systemic elements as much as its scripted ones. There are amusing cutscenes and moments of black humour in the design of certain missions that recall, more than anything else, Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy. The pride that stems from cracking a tough problem stems from a more substantial place than the vast majority of games in this genre because you haven't just bested the game's designer-you've bested yourself. The result is a puzzle game where you feel a distinct sense of ownership over your solutions. You are given tools and a goal and told to build your own way to it. At the beginning of the game, you are abducted by aliens and set to work building factories in a variety of isolated sci-fi locales: the surface of asteroids, dystopian cityscapes, floating platforms among fleets of blocky starships.Īs in Spacechem, the genius of the game is that there are no 'fixed' solutions to problems. The name invokes Infiniminer, the game that inspired Minecraft, but Infinifactory isn't a sandbox in the same sense even though it controls much like Minecraft's creative mode. This is a first-person puzzle game where you construct logic-driven machines using blocky components. The game is a showcase for imagination as well as intellect. Solving a problem in Infinifactory is a creative challenge as well as an intellectual one. It's so good, in fact, that it moves beyond its genre and starts to yield benefits from elsewhere. Judged on those terms, Infinifactory is a very good puzzle game. The quality of these games is determined by the way you feel when you move past confusion into understanding-how excitedly you punch the air when it all clicks into place, how many honorary doctorates you consider granting yourself when a designer's logic reveals itself to you.
